Ag valuation in Bexar County

Running cattle, cutting hay or farming instead of managing for wildlife? These are the Bexar Appraisal District’s published degree-of-intensity standards for the 1-d-1 agricultural valuation.

Cattle need 4 animal units on at least 15 acres; horses, sheep and goats need 3 animal units on at least 10 acres. A 7.5-acre tract can qualify if it is next to, and leased to, a larger qualified operation. Ask Bexar Appraisal District for the stocking rate it uses on larger tracts.

Minimum acres10 acres (grazing)
Minimum animals3 animal units
History and filingOutside city limits, land must be in ag use any 5 of the preceding 7 years (inside city limits, the preceding 5 years continuously). Apply by April 30; late applications carry a penalty.
Leases and small tractsA tract too small for the minimum herd may qualify if it is adjacent to and leased (written lease required) to a larger qualified operation, is at least 7.5 acres and can support 2 more animal units.

An animal unit is one cow (or cow-calf pair); a horse counts as one, and about five goats or sheep make one, though some districts count them differently. See what Texas requires for ag valuation. Your appraisal district has the final say, so call them if anything here doesn’t match your letter.
