What to keep for Calhoun County
Whether or not Calhoun County asks for a report this year, keep dated proof that you carried out at least three of the seven wildlife management practices in your plan:
- A log of each activity: the date, what you did, where and how much
- Dated photos of the work (feeders, water, brush piles, cleared brush)
- Receipts and invoices for feed, seed, materials and contractors
- Census sheets with dates, routes and numbers seen
Read our plain-English guide to the annual report (PWD-888) for the full 3-of-7 rule, or see deadlines for other counties.
Ag valuation in Calhoun County
Running cattle, cutting hay or farming instead of managing for wildlife? These are the Calhoun County Appraisal District’s published degree-of-intensity standards for the 1-d-1 agricultural valuation.
Calhoun CAD requires at least 3 animal units for grazing operations, with a recommended minimum of 10 acres for cattle and 5 acres for sheep, goats or improved-pasture hay. Recommended stocking is 5–8 acres per AU on improved pasture, 10–18 on native pasture with under 50% brush, 10–13 on open pasture and 17–23 on brushy land (over 50% canopy). Houses, barns and other improvements are valued separately at market value.
| Minimum acres | 5 acres (grazing) |
|---|---|
| Minimum animals | 3 animal units |
| Improved pasture | 5–8 acres per animal unit |
| Native pasture | 10–18 acres per animal unit |
| Hay | Improved pasture for hay: recommended minimum 5 acres; be ready to show fertilization, weed control and proof of baling. |
| Crops and orchards | Cropland (milo, corn, cotton): recommended minimum 10 acres. Truck farming (vegetables): recommended minimum 1 acre with planting, harvest and sales records. Free-range poultry: recommended minimum 2 acres at 50 birds per acre. |
| Beekeeping | Beekeeping on 5–20 acres: at least 3 colonies, plus 1 colony per 2 additional acres, up to 10 colonies on 20 acres; hives must be registered with the Texas Apiary Inspection Service. |
| History and filing | Land must have been in ag use 5 of the past 7 years. Apply between January 1 and April 30; a 60-day extension may be requested, and late applications before the ARB approves the records carry a 10% penalty. |
| Leases and small tracts | Land leased for grazing or used as part of a larger operation can qualify; it needs adequate fencing and working pens available. |

An animal unit is one cow (or cow-calf pair); a horse counts as one, and about five goats or sheep make one, though some districts count them differently. See what Texas requires for ag valuation. Your appraisal district has the final say, so call them if anything here doesn’t match your letter.
