What to keep for Trinity County
Whether or not Trinity County asks for a report this year, keep dated proof that you carried out at least three of the seven wildlife management practices in your plan:
- A log of each activity: the date, what you did, where and how much
- Dated photos of the work (feeders, water, brush piles, cleared brush)
- Receipts and invoices for feed, seed, materials and contractors
- Census sheets with dates, routes and numbers seen
Read our plain-English guide to the annual report (PWD-888) for the full 3-of-7 rule, or see deadlines for other counties.
Ag valuation in Trinity County
Running cattle, cutting hay or farming instead of managing for wildlife? These are the Trinity County Appraisal District’s published degree-of-intensity standards for the 1-d-1 agricultural valuation.
Cattle: at least 5 mother cows, at least 75% of the land open to grazing, and on larger tracts 1 cow per 5 acres. Goats or sheep: at least 7 nannies or ewes, with forage for 7 per 5 acres. Horses: breeding only, at least 3 mares producing colts, 1 horse per 2.5 acres. Smaller tracts are reviewed case by case.
| Hay | Hay: usually proof of 2 cuttings in a normal (non-drought) year, heavy fertilizing early in the year (300–500 lbs per acre), and no animals on the hayfield during the growing season. |
|---|---|
| Crops and orchards | Timber tracts of 20 acres or less need a timber management plan. Orchards, vineyards and truck farms are reviewed case by case. |
| Beekeeping | Bees: 5–20 acres, for commercial sale; 6 hives on 5 acres plus 1 hive per additional 2.5 acres. |
| History and filing | Land must be in ag use 5 of the previous 7 years, in use on January 1, with intent to produce income. A management plan may be required. |

An animal unit is one cow (or cow-calf pair); a horse counts as one, and about five goats or sheep make one, though some districts count them differently. See what Texas requires for ag valuation. Your appraisal district has the final say, so call them if anything here doesn’t match your letter.
