What to keep for Upshur County
Whether or not Upshur County asks for a report this year, keep dated proof that you carried out at least three of the seven wildlife management practices in your plan:
- A log of each activity: the date, what you did, where and how much
- Dated photos of the work (feeders, water, brush piles, cleared brush)
- Receipts and invoices for feed, seed, materials and contractors
- Census sheets with dates, routes and numbers seen
Read our plain-English guide to the annual report (PWD-888) for the full 3-of-7 rule, or see deadlines for other counties.
Ag valuation in Upshur County
Running cattle, cutting hay or farming instead of managing for wildlife? These are the Upshur County Appraisal District’s published degree-of-intensity standards for the 1-d-1 agricultural valuation.
Grazing and hay each need at least 5 acres. Cattle and horses: 1 unit per 5 acres (one rate for all pasture); goats, sheep and pigs: 2 units per acre. Free-range poultry doesn't qualify. This sheet is posted only as a scanned image.
| Minimum acres | 5 acres (grazing) |
|---|---|
| Stocking rate | 5 acres per animal unit |
| Hay | Hay: at least 5 acres and at least 3 current-year receipts or bills (fertilizer, diesel, implement parts). |
| Crops and orchards | Vineyards, orchards and truck crops: at least 5 acres; orchards 15 trees per acre, truck crops and vineyards 100 plants per acre. Timber: at least 10 acres with a written management plan. |
| Beekeeping | Bees: 5–20 acres; 6 hives on the first 5 acres plus 1 hive per additional 2.5 acres. Beekeeping needs a new application every year with 3 receipts and 3 photos of active hives. |
| History and filing | A 5-of-7-year history is required. Grazing needs at least 3 current-year receipts (livestock, feed, fertilizer, vet); Schedule F can replace receipts. Applications are due April 30, with a late penalty from May 15. Approvals last 10 years for the same owner (bees are yearly). |
| Leases and small tracts | A lease must be a current written agreement, signed and dated by both parties, saying who handles fencing, fence upkeep and fertilizing. |

An animal unit is one cow (or cow-calf pair); a horse counts as one, and about five goats or sheep make one, though some districts count them differently. See what Texas requires for ag valuation. Your appraisal district has the final say, so call them if anything here doesn’t match your letter.
